Rivian R1S breaks down within a few days from purchase, owner disgruntled

Chase Merrill, the owner of the Rivian R1S shown here, had driven his electric off-roader for two days after a three-year-long wait in the pre-order queue only to get stuck dead in a snowdrift.

According to Business Insider quoting Merrill, the owner liked the car but was so disappointed with the way Rivian treated its customers that he was considering switching to a traditional ICE SUV instead.

Having placed a reservation for the car in the now-distant year 2020, Chase took delivery of it this weekend and immediately took it for a spin in the mountains. As he tried to drive through a small snow-covered stretch of land on his way there, Merrill got stuck in the drift. He tried to pull out of the snow trap by rocking the car free, but only ended up with the electronic systems locked down in emergency mode.

A trip to the nearest service station on a tow truck cost him $2,100. When the car returned from the service, it had a critical error message displaying on the dashboard. Merrill brought it back for more repairs, and we haven’t received an update since then.

According to the owner, a simple reboot of the on-board electronics would have solved the lockdown issue, but the Rivian customer support failed to mention it during his initial emergency call. He only learned it much later, when it was no longer necessary.

For its own part, Rivian acted responsibly and agreed to cover the repairs in full, arguing that it was ‘a streak of unfortunate incidents’ that led to the situation. Merrill responded that he ‘liked the EV’ but did not feel like being a ‘guinea pig’ for the automaker to test its cars on. He added that he was considering getting a ‘normal SUV’ instead.
