Abarth ushers in the all-electric 500e, calls it its best car ever
Electrification has come to Abarth. The Fiat specialist has premiered its own version of the 500e model with numerous enhancements over the stock design. According to the company, the new EV is its best effort so far.
One of the most important features of the Abarth 500e is its perfectly even per-axle distribution of weight. Other major features include instantaneous accelerator pedal response and lengthened wheelbase.
Powering the 500e is a single electric motor mounted on the front axle, driving it with 155 PS (153 hp / 114 kW) and 235 Nm (173 lb-ft) off torque. For comparison, the stock Fiat 500e upgraded to the top spec makes only 118 PS (116 hp / 87 kW) and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque. The traction battery holds up to 42 kilowatt-hours of power and grants up to 250 km (155 miles) range by European standards.
The EV weighs in at nearly 1,400 kilos (3,100 pounds), while its gas-powered counterpart is roughly 350 kg (770 lbs) lighter. However, not even the weight difference can make it slower. The company provides a number of roundabout sprint time measurements that suggest the EV is much faster in all scenarios. For instance, it needs 1.5 seconds to go 40-60 km/h (25-37 mph), down from the 2.5 seconds of the ICE car. It is also faster to reach 100 km/h.
Buyers who would like to get their electric Abarth 500e as soon as possible will have to settle for the deluxe €43,000 Scorpionissima Edition. Simpler versions will become available in December, the company says.
