Denmark-based toy brick set manufacturer Lego has enlisted the help of Maranello HQ to produce a painstakingly precise replica of the Ferrari Daytona SP3, complete with a few unique parts.

The whole project took over two years to complete and began back in the time when the car itself was not finished. Whenever Ferrari altered the original design before production, Lego had to redesign its own scale replica to match.

Buyers can now assemble their kits much in the same way and order real supercars are put together: engine first, then gearbox, rear and front suspension, handling, and finally the bodywork.

The set features an intricate butterfly-door mechanism that looks impressively like the real thing and works very smoothly, too. Another huge challenge was implementing functional paddle shifters, which the company once again achieved – you can now actually use those tiny paddles under the steering wheel to switch gears in a toy car.

As a Targa body type, the Daytona SP3 has removable roof panels – and so does the imitation. As a Lego rep proudly pointed out, you can lift the car by its front or rear end with the roof open, and it will still hold together and not crumble, like some of the more basic replicas tend to do.

As if all of the above weren’t impressive enough, even the wheels are special in this set. The original Ferrari uses an asymmetrical set of rims to optimize aerodynamic performance. The same applies to the model, so make sure you do not accidentally switch front and rear wheels when assembling.
