After a waiting time that seemed only too long, Volkswagen finally took the wraps of its first production SUV powered by batteries: the ID.4.

After a waiting time that seemed only too long, Volkswagen finally took the wraps of its first production SUV powered by batteries: the ID.4.

The model comes based on the same MEB platform as the VW ID.3 hatchback and the Skoda Enyaq SUV and is only marginally smaller than the latter at 4,584mm x 1,852mm x 1,612 mm L/W/H. It also commands a slightly smaller trunk at 543 liters (19.2 cubic feet) and a drag ratio of 0.28 instead of 0.27. The wheelbase is identical at 2,770 mm.

Different countries will be getting their own, localized ID.4 models, but for the time being, all cars will be exported from Germany. The ID.4 1st Edition will be the first to hit the market with a single 204-PS (150-kW) electric motor on the rear axle and an 82-kWh battery with 77 kilowatt-hours of useful capacity. Sprinting from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 8.5 seconds, and the top speed lies at 160 km/h (99 mph).

The range is being reported differently based on the region. In Europe, the model is certified for 520 kilometers (323 miles) of uninterrupted driving on a single charge. In the United States, it comes rated at 404 kilometers (250 miles). Fast charging is supported by both versions, and a performance spec will be coming to the market later on based on the Skoda Enyaq RS iV flagship. This one will offer 306 PS (225 kW), Volkswagen reports.

Sales in Europe will begin in the fourth quarter of 2020. The USA will have to wait until 2021, even though the prices have already been announced. The base spec will begin at U.S. $39,995, eligible for the EV discount of $7,500. The 1st Edition will start from $43,995, and the 306PS, AWD spec will set you back $43,695 or more. Once production starts locally in the States, Volkswagen USA plans to drop the starting price to just $35,000.

Subject to regional availability, options may include LED or LED Matrix headlights, custom wheel ranging between 19 and 21 inches in diameter, drive mode selection, panoramic glass roof, 10- and 12-inch touchscreen displays, voice control support, dual-zone HVAC, power-adjusted seats with memory and massage functions, web services, IQ.Drive electronic aids, and six or more airbags.

Just like the ID.3, the ID.4 can receive updates over the air, which means customers will be able to unlock certain features via software after purchasing their car.
